Before and After: A Knutsford Kitchen Makeover

Upgrading our homes is expensive and sometimes we need to be creative to get the look we want on the budget available. One way to save money and breathe life into your kitchen is to partly upgrade rather than going for full scale remodelling. It is surprising what can be achieved with colour, lighting, flooring and replacement worktops.

Local fabricator Cheshire Granite Worktops, recently worked with a Knutsford resident to replace her laminate worktops with black mirror quartz. Her kitchen cabinets themselves were in excellent condition, but the yellow porcelain wall tiles, green laminate worktops, green floor tiles and mosaic wall tiles around the archway left the room feeling dark, drab and tired outdated.

Utilising the Inspire My Kitchen’ design service by Debra Carroll Interiors of Wilmslow, her outdated kitchen was transformed into a contemporary space, and for a much smaller investment than a completely new kitchen. Replacing laminate with quartz or granite worktops can make an instant impact.

The makeover focused on key aspects including lighting; the tiling, which was old fashioned and the worktop and flooring which were showing signs of wear and tear.

The makeover project looked at:

A budget plan and mood board.
Improved lighting by adding LED down lighters and strip lighting.
Removing wall tiles and re-skimming walls.
Squaring off an archway to create a more contemporary feel.
Laying black shimmer floor tiles to compliment the black sparkle quartz worktop.
Replacing window sills and cooker splash back with the black quartz.

On completion of the makeover project, Knutsford resident Mrs. M said I am really pleased with the results achieved in my kitchen. It feels so much bigger and brighter than before, simply by making straight forward design changes that I wouldnt have thought about doing previously. The small investment has essentially given me a fabulous new kitchen at a fraction of the cost.

For a kitchen makeover that will improve form, function and style for years to come, follow these simple design tips.

  1. Take the time to understand what look you want to achieve in your kitchen.
  2. Use a colour wheel to check out which colours work well together. Think about introducing more bold colours, which are on trend for 2013.
  3. Be inventive and think about up-cycling or re-utilising accessories and furnishings that already exist in your kitchen or home.
