Cheshire Granite Worktops

Granite Worktops

Every granite worktop is unique, and each has an exceptional history.

For many people, it’s this very individuality that makes a granite worktop so special. Granite is also low-maintenance and retains its natural beauty for years. It provides outstanding stain and heat resistance, low maintenance and a cool, sterile surface for the preparation of food.

What’s more, granite worktops have a natural beauty and a harmonious colour palette; giving rise to a multitude of variations in colour. Just as important for busy, modern kitchens, granite is low maintenance and retains its natural beauty for years; providing outstanding stain and heat resistance and a cool, sterile surface for the preparation of food.

Frequently Asked Questions – Granite Worktops

Granite & Quartz Basics

Q: What is granite?

Granite is a natural stone formed over billions of years from molten lava. Its strength, durability, and heat resistance make it an excellent material for kitchen worktops.

Quartz is a man-made (engineered) stone made from natural quartz crystals mixed with resin. It is extremely durable, hard-wearing, and low-maintenance, making it a popular modern choice.

Sink Cut-Outs & Functional Features

Q: What is an undermount sink cut-out?

An undermount cut-out is a precisely shaped opening that allows the sink to be fitted underneath the worktop for a sleek, seamless look and easy cleaning.

Drainer grooves are carved lines in the worktop surface that help guide water back into the sink. Usually installed as a set of 5 (sometimes 4), they combine practicality with an elegant finish—ideal for undermount and Belfast sinks.

This is an unpolished cut-out designed for sinks or hobs that sit on top of the worktop rather than beneath it.

Worktop Edge Profiles & Shaping

Q: What does “profile” mean?

A profile refers to the shape of the worktop edge. Different profiles create different visual styles.

This is the most common profile—featuring a square edge softened with a slight chamfer at the top and bottom. It gives a clean, modern look.

A bullnose edge has a smooth, rounded half-circle shape. Though less common today, it’s perfect for traditional designs and adds softness to the overall appearance.

An arch is a full curved edge. It can be deep for a bold curve or shallow for a more subtle finish.

A radius corner replaces a sharp 90° angle with a curved edge. Sizes range from very small (like a 2p coin) to very large (like a dinner plate). Large radius corners are often used on curved base units and add both elegance and safety.

A breakfront is a curved cut-out along the front edge of the worktop. It’s commonly used above curved drawer units where the worktop needs to contour around the cabinetry.

Worktop Edge Profiles & Shaping

Q: What are upstands?

Upstands are 10–11cm high borders placed where the worktop meets the wall. Made from thinner matching material, they protect walls from water and provide a clean, finished look—especially helpful if the walls aren’t perfectly straight.

Splashbacks are rectangular panels fitted behind the hob, sink, or range cooker to prevent water or cooking splashes. Often 20mm thick, they can be fitted up to the extractor or to the top of wall units and can be shaped to fit curved extractors.
